What is Middle School Math Connections ?
Math Connections is a Title I Class for Middle School Students.
The class is 45 minutes long and its purpose is for math support as
scholars progress in their academic mathematics class.
Scholars will work on Math 180 to fill gaps in foundation skills by using algebraic thinking to prepare for more complex and detailed skills they will need for their grade level curriculum.
The class will also allow for students to receive additional assistance with material from their core mathematics class (6th, 7th, 8th Math).
Below is more detailed information about what assignments,
online programs, and assessments used in this class to determine
performance and grades for class.

Grading: Participation and classwork are the most important parts of this class and affect your grade the most. Assessments will be given from time to time in order to determine what skills need to be practiced and mastered. Scholars must use a Growth Mindset, Participate, Stay on task, Take responsibility and ask for assistance when needed, and work with other students during activities in class. Grade will be affected by behavior, participation, effort, and growth mindset.

Behavior and Participation:
Class Dojo will be used to enforce good behavior, participation, and, most importantly, communication with parents on classroom information.
Parent can use the app to receive and send messages. In addition the program will track daily progress on choices made in class that helps or inhibits learning. I encourage positives and negative results to be used for discussion and learning how to make changes that encourages learning.

Participation/Classwork: Time spent online using the Math 180 program will be part of the participation grade in Math Connections/Enrichment. This is essential in enabling scholars to progress and build confidence in their math ability. Students will also work on lessons in the Math 180 curriculum outside of the online program.
Classwork: There will be other assignments in class that students will do related to content review (6th, 7th, 8th grade material), reviewing foundations skills (fractions, multiplication, etc.), and problem solving to encourage thinking, math discourse (math discussions/sharing math thinking) to improve confidence and ability in mathematics.
Assessment: It is important for scholars and parent/guardians to understand that assessments are not meant to be feared but a way to measure progress. Students learning material they are unfamiliar with will have a lower result, but as they learn more and increase their knowledge, the results will show gains. Assessment is 10% of the average because we want to praise the PROGRESS, the IMPROVEMENT on the skill, not the actual score.
Example: A student who initially performs at 20% in their knowledge of fractions and increases to 60% at the next assessment is usually seen as someone who is still failing in that skillset. Please understand that when a student improves their knowledge from 20% to 60%, they have made a significant increase in their knowledge of that skillset. This is why assessment is only 10% of the average. Focus on the improvement, not the score.
